Department of Justice officials said in a news release Tuesday that 35-year-old Apollo Nida pleaded guilty to his involvement in the $2.3 million scheme. Nida is the husband of Phaedra Parks, one of the reality show’s stars. Prosecutors say beginning in 2009, Nida and co-conspirators stole and obtained checks, filed fraudulent tax returns and made fraudulent claims against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the victims’ names in at least 11 states. Prosecutors say the group also took out phony auto loans and created fake documents and websites to secure them.
Authorities say the group laundered the money by stealing victims’ identities and opening bank accounts in their names.
Sentencing is set for July 8. Apollo is facing up to 30 years in prison.
