Boxing Judge Who Scored Mayweather-Alvarez A Draw Steps Down

Cynthia J. Ross, the boxing judge who scored the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Canelo Alvarez fight a draw, is stepping down indefinitely.

This is the second controversial ruling for Ross in the last 15 months. In June 2012, she was one of two judges who scored in favor of Timothy Bradley in his title bout with Manny Pacquiao, which Bradley won on a split decision.
 

Ross scored the Mayweather-Alvarez bout 114-114, compared to the two other judges, Dave Moretti and Craig Metcalfe, who scored the bout 116-112 and 117-111, respectively. Mayweather won by majority decision. Each judge earned $8,000 for the fight.

According to the report, Ross and the chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission, Bill Brady, met Tuesday with the intention of reviewing her controversial scorecard from Saturday’s fight.

“To her credit, [Ross] does not want to take away from the story … So she has asked us if she can take some time off, [and] we’ve agreed. It shows the type of person she is. Bill was very understanding and supportive. He agreed that that was a great avenue to take,” NAC executive director Keith Kizer said.

All boxing judges and referees have to re-apply each year for a license.

Ross has been a judge for 22 years and she doesn’t know if she’ll re-apply.
